Many Airsoft fans make up their own scenarios, which are often emulations of military, police or gangster scenarios. There are Toronto Airsoft groups that regularly arrange games in the city, i

Many Airsoft games use the tactics that are commonly used in the military and there is usually a specific object for a team or individual to reach. Also, players typically use emulations of tactical equipment in order to achieve their objective. There is also a required level of safety in competitions and games and safety equipment is necessary. These include special safety goggles and a face mask to provide protection to the face. It is also important that player stick to a minimum firing distance so that the pellet does not cause their opponent any pain.

Many groups employ certain safety rules, such as having a maximum muzzle velocity and shooting distance guidelines. Owning these guns is legal in most countries, although markings are typically required in order to distinguish them from real firearms.

The guns used in the sport will be spring powered, electric powered or gas powered. The gas powered guns are considered the most accurate and realistic. They are able to fire multiple shots without the need to cock the gun. They are also more realistic to operate and have a kick that resembles that of a real gun.

Replica guns tend to be the most popular with fans of the sport. These guns are virtually the same as their real counterparts and include, World War 2 classic firearms, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, Al Capone style machine guns, police firearms and many others. These guns add a new level to the sport as fans can invent fun and exciting scenarios and highly accurate military simulations.

The majority of guns fire white plastic pellets that usually weigh between 0.20 grams to 0.25 grams depending on the gun. Sniper rifles will use heavier pellets for greater accuracy as they are not so affected by the wind. Pellets are usually supplied in bottles containing 2000 or 5000 pellets. Grenade launchers use balls made from foam to emulate real grenades.

Many Airsoft rifles and pistol employ the Hopup system that creates better range. This is because the system puts backspin onto pellets when they are fired and makes them rise upwards slightly. Hopup can be adjusted for backspin, although the normal setting is usually fine for most players.
