By Dr Len Schwartz

If you would like to have a great year financially, its advisable to try small business marketing strategies and ideas. Good dentist marketing makes a difference between a dental practice that is highly profitable and the one that simply pays bills. To have the former, there are some mistakes that need to be avoided.

First there is the mistake of being generic and it needs to be totally avoided. Most things but being generic should work when trying to be a profitable practice. It is advisable to try and be different using the things that are unique and different about your practice. The brand you will develop form this will set you on top of your competitors.

Since the patients are the life blood of your practice do not take them for granted even for a second. Instead build personal interest with your patients and always ensure that they are comfortable when attending their appointments. In addition you can try other methods that make your patients feel valued for instance you can start sending them birthday cards.

When you sent out mass mail and then wait for new patients to stream in great numbers, this will have very little effect contrary to expectations. Success will come through sustained marketing. Rather than using single assault on target market, a campaign should be planned instead. Also remember that you should not market only when things are slow.

The best way to market you expertise is through word of mouth and not my mere referral programs. When you don't use this method and instead use just referral programs there are many opportunities that you miss out on that could help increase the number of patients. The best way to motivate your patients to help you get more referrals through word of mouth is by offering them discounts or special offers on every referral they manage to get.

Another big mistake is not utilizing the use of websites. You should have one because many prospective clients use the internet to find a new dentist. Remember your search engine ranking should be high in terms of keywords and phrases that the engine uses to identify your expertise. If they are not high, the patients will find your competitors instead.

Another mistake is not producing newsletters for your patients. When putting down the names and addresses of your patients, ask them for their email addresses too. It is these emails that you will need to send the patients their copy of the monthly or quarterly newsletter. The information in these newsletters should be educational which in turn promotes the practice. The usefulness of the information contained in the newsletters should be as genuine as possible to make the patients look forward to reading the next issue. The patients might also probably pass the newsletter to friends or relatives.

Another dentist marketing mistake is not asking the patients for feedback. You could be doing a great job but without asking the patients you will never know exactly. Ask for regular feedback from your patients. By doing this you will know the things you are doing right and build on them, you will also know the areas that need to be improved.
