Lots of web designers are experimenting with new type settings and fonts. One designer said that in 2014 we will be seeing fonts with personality. Apple changed its design from a 3D, shadowed design to a very straight forward "flat design." And what Apple does, everyone else seems to follow, and so there are lots of sites coming out with the same "flat design" concept.
There will still be large "Hero Areas" which are large areas at the top of the page with an image and with a little amount of text, giving an aura of grandeur. This trend is likely to expand due to its seeming popularity and attractiveness on home pages of websites. The are quickly becoming a big thing on real estate websites where the sliders used to be.
Everyone is aware of how Apple sets the trend for lots of other products, and 2014 will be no exception. Up to now, Apple has had color as its splash of notoriety, but now they are moving toward more of a plain, flat design, called "flat design." Imagine that. Now instead of shadows and gradients, the whole motif will be, just plain.
In 2013, large 'Hero Areas' at the top of sites, borrowed from print, is bound to continue, yet probably without the sliders which are not the viewers best friend. Expect large areas with some print backed up with a large print. This approach seems to work well with real estate sites, with the real 'meat' on farther down. The hero space is going to be very creative and exciting.
Responsiveness is the name of the game, and now it is moving to mobile. Roughly 60 percent of all searchers are doing their searching on mobile devices, so now the mobile apps are gearing up for the biggest mobile promotion yet. More email capture, scrolling sites, and videos instead reading, will be what people will be looking for in 2014.
