Smart Business Negotiation Techniques Guaranteed to Increase Your Income

By Paul Burvine

One of your very best weapons for any business negotiations is accurate information. You need to be prepared in your own mind to make this work as well. You should never enter into any negotiations with a negative outlook about anything. Anytime you enter into negotiations, and your frame of mind is weak, you will fail - that's how it works. It is always recommended to have great information on your side if you want to find success. Understanding your opponents business is also critical, even if you know your own like the back of your hand. Your opponent is still your opponent, even if you want a win-win situation for everyone involved.

You can get better at negotiating by learning how to do a couple of things really well. You can usually help yourself by quite a lot by learning how to ask the right questions and do some active listening. The important thing about active listening is to talk less than you are listening. Most people will always prefer to talk in just about any setting.

If you want to encourage the other person to continue talking, there are different body postures, facial expressions, etc that you can use. This is another reason why you need to know who you'll be negotiating with before it begins. A skilled negotiator will be really good at these things and use them to their own advantages. Your personal as well as your professional life will be equally informed based on the attitudes and the beliefs that you hold. This is why holding a positive outlook while you are negotiating is important. We have all been told to "shoot for the stars" at some point. If you don't quite reach the stars, then you'll hit the moon which is not bad at all. Ask for the things you want as well as things that go beyond what you want. This is a really common approach but not everybody can take it. What you ask for in the beginning should be way beyond what is actually normal and you should do that because you feel good about your chances of actually getting it.

You need to choose the approach that works best for you and figure out how to make it successful. You need to be highly skilled at negotiating if you want to be successful at win-no win strategy. Otherwise, you will have to know how to be a specific sort of ruthless and that isn't always going to be an option. The win-win strategy is best served when you have the capability of putting yourself into the other side's position. You'll have a much easier time creating a win-win outcome when you truly understand your opposition's point of view and situation.

If you want to make sure your negotiations have a buffer, set up 24 hours of time, at least, to ask us if you need it. You can easily do this by saying that you need to consult with other people. Even though this tactic works, you are more than likely the only person that will make decisions that mean anything. Should this be the situation, your essentially lying about what you need to do. Examples of that person could be a ghost partner or those designated as trusted advisers. You need to tell them that they will remain anonymous, despite needing to talk with them. If you are the key and only decision-maker, you need to keep this fabrication up until negotiations are complete. When doing negotiations with people or businesses, having the right or proper perspective is absolutely imperative. Always be cordial, polite and professional and avoid getting too close to them, emotionally. Don't talk with these people in a personal way. You are there for business. Remember? Remember that any small talk is usually the other person trying to take advantage of you in some way without you realizing it.
