Social Media Marketing: Is Charlie Sheen Its Knight?

By Rob Sutter

Not much that is new can be said about Charlie Sheen, is there? Simply put, Sheen is a wild man with a mean strike about a mile wide, despite the cracks made about him in the past. Once the co-star of "Two and a Half Men," his erratic behavior has given him the label of Internet sensation, though not for the right reasons. World Wrestling Entertainment seems to have taken heed to Sheen's popularity, too. However, is this walking Internet meme truly beneficial towards the social media marketing of the WWE?

I have to wonder if anyone truly gives a care about Charlie Sheen apart from the people who run WWE. In my mind, the company could have strengthened their social media marketing actions much better by utilizing a figure with relevancy in this day and age. Sheen's Internet popularity, if you ask me, has been short-lived once it truly piqued in mid-2011. Fishbat, which is a robust online marketing firm, would agree that staying current is everything in social media. Sheen being used by WWE is questionable.

Not only is Sheen's relevancy lacking in today's social media world but his interest in WWE doesn't seem to be present. As a current fan, I watch the show and I see talent such as commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler and he sounds disinterested in the product, only speaking the lines that are fed to him via headset. I'd argue that Sheen's indifference to the product is stronger, since he seems to be speaking like a newscaster whose only knowledge of wrestling is what a body slam is. Why sign a person to make appearances if they don't care about the product?

Recently, there have been a few rumors floating around the Internet that Sheen will somehow be involved in Summerslam, WWE's grand show of the summer. When it comes to celebrities and pay-per-view events, there is either a hit or a miss to be had. A hit would be something like Mr. T joining forces with Hulk Hogan at the first WrestleMania back in 1985. A miss can be an event such as Snooki being featured in the same event twenty-five years later. WWE, with total control of the match card, can potentially make ticket-holders regret their purchase.

My only hope right now is that Sheen is as lightly featured at SummerSlam as possible so that he doesn't take away valuable time. The wrestlers who are contracted by the WWE work a rigorous road schedule and it's insulting for someone else to step in and claim time that they have not earned. Even with the realm of social media, I have my qualms. Sheen's candle has gone out and his lack of any flame will most likely be heavily apparent on August 19th at SummerSlam.
